UNEP AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) assists member states in achieving relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for cities, such as SDG 11 for Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements, with a focus on basic services, affordable housing, a sustainable transportation system, sustainable urbanisation, access to public spaces, sustainable buildings, per capita environmental impact of cities, policies against climate change, resource efficiency, and disaster risk reduction.

On the basis of government initiatives, climate risk, urbanization pressure, and risk to the environment, the index has assigned grades to 36 cities. In terms of commercial real estate, the top five green-rated cities in the Asia-Pacific area were Singapore, Sydney, Wellington, Perth, and Melbourne.

HYDERABAD, AMONG INDIAN CITIES

According to Knight Frank, Hyderabad is one of the top 20 cities in Asia Pacific (APAC) for adhering to sustainability standards in the development of commercial real estate.

While Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai are in the 17th, 18th, and 20th spots, respectively, in the APAC area, Bengaluru has been placed in 14th. Hyderabad, Delhi, and Mumbai all fell inside the silver level, with Bengaluru being the only city in India to attain the gold grade.

FUTURE GOALS

The primary areas of focus for the current work on sustainable cities include a roadmap for sustainable consumption and production for cities that covers all sectors, as well as upstream actions using technology, policy, and funding to manage pollution and waste and reduce it.

Since the majority of countries derive over 80% of their GDP from urban regions, the effectiveness and productivity of cities affect the long-term productivity and overall stability of the region. In order to address inefficient resource use patterns, UNEP consistently promotes sustainable consumption and production methods throughout the Asia-Pacific region, with cities serving as the focal point for such challenges.
